    Dear All--

Casting is my least favorite part of any show! Even though I choose shows with a variety of larger roles [9 in Pinafore] there are always way more talented students than I can possibly cast in these limited number of roles.

Very few sixth graders audition well. During auditions I do my best to summon as much discernment and good judgment as I can- to predict which of these great kids, eight weeks from now, will create the best performance in any particular role. I don't always get it right. If I have not cast your child in a larger role, it is no reflection upon their talent or skills. It is just that this time through, for this show at this time, I didn't think they were the best person for the role. Please help your child, if they are disappointed, work through these emotions to get to the other side. We will all have fun together, and work hard.

There are always heartaches and disappointments at this stage of the game, and I wish I could avoid them. But once we get beyond this, I promise to work with all of your children to help them develop individual characters to play, and that everyone will have a good time growing and learning through the experience.

This week's rehearsals are to just start to get into the groove. After the holiday we will move into the following schedule with the larger groups:

Mondays at 3:15 and Fridays at 3:15: Sisters, Cousins, & Aunts [referred to, for short, as Relatives. Always includes Hebe]

Wednesdays at 3:15 and Fridays at 3:15: Crew [Always includes Bill Bobstay, the Boatswain's mate AND Bob Beckett, Carpenter's Mate. Sometimes includes Ralph Rackstraw and/or Dick Deadeye]

Within each of these groups, there are a select group of Dancers. Normal rehearsal time for Relatives Dance Group will be Monday at 4:15; normal rehearsal time for Crew Dance Group will be Wednesdays at 4:15.

Smaller rehearsals will be scheduled according to students' availability.

UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE ALL REHEARSALS WILL BE IN THE CAFETERIA

Monday 3:15 - 4:30 FULL CAST MEETING!! If this is a day and time that you are normally not available to rehearse [there are four of you] see if you might get to this meeting anyway. If you can't attend, please contact someone to take notes for you and tell you everything that happened.

We will be handing out scripts to those that come with a three ring binder. No binder, no script :-) If you forget your binder that day, you can stop off on Tuesday or Wednesday to pick up your script- with your three ring binder. It does not need to be a thick one, a narrow one will do.

Over vacation anyone with spoken lines needs to 1) Highlight their lines in the script 2) circle or underline any words you don't know 3) Look up those words, so you know what they mean and how to pronounce them and 4) Memorize your spoken lines.

Everyone should highlight the lines or lyrics that you speak or sing.

CHARACTERS WITH SPOKEN LINES SHOULD COME TO THE FIRST REHEARSAL AFTER THE BREAK WITH ALL LINES MEMORIZED!!!!!

Two odd pronunciations for everyone: One chacter's name is Ralph Rackstraw. "Ralph" is pronounced "Rafe" with a long "a". Rhymes with "safe".

Another character is Bill Bobstay, Boatswain's Mate. "Boatswain" is pronounced "Bosen" with a long "o". Rhymes with "frozen".

Rehearsal Schedule for next week 12/14 - 12/17 [all in the cafeteria]:

Monday: 3:15 - 4:30 FULL CAST MEETING [and we'll start to learn some music]

Tuesday: 3:15-4:15 - Josephine, Sir Joseph, Captain; 4:15-5:15 - Ralph, Boatswain, Carpenter

    Wednesday: 3:15-4:15 - Captain, Deadeye; 4:15-5:15 - Captain, Buttercup
