Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! The Hillside staff joins me in extending a very special welcome to our new Hillside families. I am also extremely pleased to introduce Mr. John DeKams, our new assistant principal. John and I look forward to working together with you to do great things for our kids!
This new school year promises to be filled with stimulating learning opportunities. We will begin a balanced literacy model in ELA where our professional learning will focus on Reader’s Workshop. We will concentrate on supporting our students in reading a wide variety of books and facilitating conversations about the books. In addition, we will be placing emphasis on what students are doing as readers so that we can meet them where they are in instruction. This work is both challenging and exciting! At Back to School Nights on September 7th (K-2) and 12th (Grades 3-4), teachers will provide you with more detailed information about your child’s grade level literacy curriculum. Additionally, we encourage you to be our partners in building a “Readerly Life” by reading at home with your child.
Another goal for this school year will be the successful rollout of our new social-emotional learning program, Second Step. Classroom teachers will share weekly lessons around important concepts including skills for learning, empathy, emotion management and problem solving. Our new part-time school counselor, Ms. Juliann Snyder, will also support the program with monthly classroom lessons and strategies at recess time. Furthermore, students will learn about our new core values- Respect, Courage and Curiosity- and be recognized for demonstrating these important principles. Thanks to Lila Husovsky, incoming second grader here at Hillside, we will be welcoming students back to school with a new theme:
We may all be different fish, but in Hillside School, we swim together!
This theme will be woven throughout the school experience…even our photo booth!
In an effort to ensure that all parents receive our Summer Mailing regardless of location, we have put it online on our webpage. Please click on the hyperlinks in this letter for easy access. We have included a Checklist of Important Documents outlining the documents that need to be completed and returned on the first day of school to your child’s classroom teacher.
This year, we will have a few new protocols.
- All students will have a full day of school beginning September 5th. There WILL NOT be any half days for kindergarten as in the past.
- All classrooms will be NUT-FREE. Students will be permitted to have nuts and nut products in the Café only. Please see our Food at Hillside letter.
- Arrival and dismissal procedures will be revised. Please see our Transportation/Arrival/Dismissal Procedures letter.
The home-school partnership is a critical component in ensuring your child’s success. We will continue to communicate with you often through our Constant Contact blast. Please sign up for this communication. Additionally, please look out for our News from the Hill on the first Friday of the month beginning in October. This newsletter shares all of the wonderful learning happening at Hillside! Finally, Hillside will be increasing its use of Twitter so that parents can “see” the excitement at Hillside in real time. Please follow us @Hillside10706.
I also encourage you to get involved in our parent groups including PTSA and SEPTA. On September 5th, our PTSA will sponsor a Back to School Breakfast for parents in the Hillside Café from 8:15-9:30 AM. At this breakfast, you will have the opportunity to meet other Hillside parents and learn more about all that our parent community does to support Hillside. We are very grateful for this partnership!
I know that you are anxious to receive your child’s placement for the new school year. Placement will be shared on the Parent Portal at the end of August, as sections may still split due to increasing enrollment. A blast will go out informing you of the date and time of release. If you have not yet registered on the Parent Portal, please do so. In the meantime, please access the Grade Level Supply Lists on our webpage under Hillside Headlines. Additionally, your child will receive a letter from his/her teacher before school begins welcoming him/her to the new classroom. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
In preparing for the start of school, I encourage you to read through our Parent/Student Handbook. This tool will share Hillside’s procedures and policies that have been designed to ensure a successful and safe learning opportunity.
I am confident that our 2017-2018 school year will be a very special one. Please feel free to stop in, call, or email me to discuss any concerns, suggestions, or ideas to make the Hillside experience even better!
I look forward to seeing you in September!
