National Merit Semi-Finalist Announced
Alexander Weitzman Qualifies as a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist in the 2020 National Merit® Scholarship Program
Hastings-on-Hudson, NY – Hastings High School senior Alexander P. Weitzman has the high distinction of being named a National Merit® Scholarship Semi-Finalist in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship competition based on the scores he earned on the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). He is one of a select group of students representing less than one percent of over 1.5 million high school juniors that entered the competition.
“Alex is one of the hardest working, most engaged students in the high school, and a student-athlete. He epitomizes what we want our high school students to be,” expressed Louis Adipietro, Principal, Hastings High School.
At Hastings High School, Alex has been most inspired by his AP Chemistry and SUPA American History courses. Once he graduates, he is leaning towards pursuing a degree in mathematics, statistics or possibly neuroscience. In addition to his scholastic aptitude he is very involved in clubs, organizations and sports. Alex is a student representative on the school’s Challenge Success Board; a mentor for elementary school students who need help developing social, emotional and sensory-based skills through Project Inclusion; a member of the Steel Drum Ensemble and Academic Challenge Team; and on Varsity Baseball playing middle infield.
Semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT® or ACT® scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation.
