Questions About College Answered With Help From Guidance Office

Hastings High School students had the chance to have their questions about college answered with help from the high school guidance office.

The Hastings High School guidance office offered a virtual college night Wednesday for juniors and their families to get some tips and information about what they can expect when they start applying to colleges.

With six panelists joining the conversation, participants were able to ask them questions about the college experience and what their colleges look for in prospective students. Director of School Counseling and College Placement Jeanette Kocur managed the webinar and presented tips and guidelines on how to approach applications.

“It's about informing the public about the early start to the college process,” she said. “Listening to the colleges and their expertise in the areas of what it looks like to apply and what they look for in an applicant.”

Kocur said with COVID-19 changing how colleges and universities operate, no one is sure how the future will look. The panelists were able to provide insight on their campuses and online environments and how they have adapted since the start of the pandemic.

“We looked at how they’re dealing with virtual things,” she said. “How they’ve had to pivot and shift around with how they handle their campuses.”

Though college information night is held every year at the school, this was the first time it took place online. For Kocur, holding it in person was great for interaction with the families but setting it up on Zoom had its advantages as well.

“This platform was great,” she said. “I was able to get panelists that I wouldn't normally get in person.”

For those who missed the event, Kocur said her door is always open. Additionally, the guidance counseling office will be providing more informational sessions in the near future.

“We will be having individual meetings with junior families beginning in February,” she said.

The colleges who had representatives join the meeting were:

The University of Albany

Spelman College

The University of Michigan

Syracuse University

St. Thomas Aquinas College
