Chinese culture was brought alive for our third grade students this week with a visit from two very special people. Hastings resident and world-renowned illustrator and author Ed Young, and Emma Bowers, HHS student and ambassador for the U.S. China Strong Program, gave a presentation about the history of Chinese writing. What an amazing sight it was to see a 40-foot scroll unfurl as Mr. Young used it to read his book, Beyond The Great Mountains, A Visual Poem About China. Children were then able to create their own Chinese words, and share their ideas with Mr. Young and Ms. Bowers. A culminating activity was watching lanterns that Mr. Young had carved out of paper bags come alive as they were shown on the ceiling and walls! The goal of Ms. Bowers as ambassador was to promote Chinese learning in America, a goal this program certainly met!
