Veterans Honored by Hastings' Students, Staff

On Friday, November 9, Hastings students celebrated Veteran's Day with visits from local residents who have served or are currently serving in the military.  At FMS and HHS, veterans visited students in their classrooms to recount history and answer questions. At Hillside, a school-wide assembly was held with songs sung and statements of gratitude read by the children.
The recognition and celebration of veterans in Hastings began three and a half years ago with a chance meeting and conversation between community members Barbara Kennedy and Lisa Eggert Litvin. They had no idea that their conversation would lead to the full-on celebration that has become an institution in our school district today.

Everyone wishes to extend a special thank you to the police for the grand escort of the vets, to the village for the bus transportation, to the principals and assistant principals for their continuous enthusiasm for this project, to the teachers and department chairs for embracing the Veterans in their classes and creating schedules that work, to the custodial staff for preparing the spaces, to the support staff for keeping everyone organized, to the students, for listening, asking questions, singing, and presenting, and to the PTSA, for sponsoring this wonderful event.

Most of all, Hastings thanks its dear Veterans, not just for their service to our nation, but for sharing their experiences with the students and for letting them show their gratitude.  Thank you to our Veterans and active service personnel, and those visiting with our students today:
