Dr. Valerie Henning-Piedmonte Appointed New Superintendent of Schools as of July 1, 2019

The Hastings-on-Hudson Board of Education is pleased to announce that Valerie Henning-Piedmonte, Ed.D. has been appointed Superintendent of Schools beginning July 1, 2019. Dr. Henning-Piedmonte comes to Hastings from the Brewster Central School District where she was Superintendent of Schools, Deputy Superintendent of Schools and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. The appointment was made at the March 25, 2019 Regular Board of Education Meeting.

“Hastings-on-Hudson has a long tradition of excellence in New York State and the country. I am honored to have the opportunity to work alongside a talented and dedicated team of educators, administrators and staff in service to all children and families in Hastings,” expressed Dr. Henning-Piedmonte on her appointment. “I look forward to getting to know the Hastings community through the eyes of children, parents, educators, administrators, staff and the Board of Education.”

In choosing Dr. Henning-Piedmonte, the Board and its search consultants were guided by feedback received over the past couple years from administrators, faculty, staff, partner organizations, parents, and community members. From forty applications five finalists were chosen. And, after two rounds of interviews and extensive reference checking by the Board and search consultants, two finalists met in front of a 17-member, district-wide interview committee who provided further thoughts and guidance to the Board.

“We look forward to working with Dr. Henning-Piedmonte in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition, and in the coming years to continue to guide and grow the district. As part of her onboarding process Dr. Henning-Piedmonte will begin meeting with people throughout the district during the spring,” stated Doug Sundheim, Board President.

Dr. Henning-Piedmonte’s stated her attraction to lead the Hastings School District lies in its commitment to providing experiences for all students that not only challenge their sensibilities, but nourish their intellectual curiosity. “It is evident that the Hastings-on-Hudson School District has the ingredients necessary to prepare all children to become successful global citizens. I am excited to be here at the start of the improvements in the facilities as a result of the recent passing of an $18.3 million construction bond. This symbolizes the community’s belief that children deserve to learn in safe, comfortable and modern spaces. I am happy that I am joining a community that places a high value on education.”

This year marks Dr. Henning-Piedmonte’s 25th year as an educator. Her pathway includes being a Reading teacher and a Humanities teacher in the New York City Public Schools, Assistant Principal in the White Plains City School District, Principal in the Uniondale Union Free School District, and Director of Instruction and Professional Development and Assistant Superintendent in the Clarkstown Central School District. She earned her Doctor of Education and Master of Arts in English Education and Master of Education in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University. A career changer, her undergraduate degree is from Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Business with a minor in English.

Dr. Henning-Piedmonte has been a resident of New York City for more than 30 years. In their marriage of 21 years, she and her husband Scott enjoy traveling and all the splendors of New York City.
