Design work for New Hillside Addition and FMS Auditorium Renovation Presented

Design work for New Hillside Addition and FMS Auditorium Renovation Presented

At the September 9, 2019 Board of Education meeting, design plans for the addition to Hillside Elementary School and the renovation work at the Farragut Middle School Auditorium were unveiled. After much community and district input in selecting the design architects PBDW out of New York City, the plans were welcomed by all present. The design addressed not only space issues, but also the environmental impact and well-being of the students, while maximizing the use of new and redesigned learning spaces.

To create the proposed plan, PBDW took into account many details in designing the addition to Hillside Elementary School including looking at the pathways students, parents and teachers use for access in and out of the school, and assessing the surrounding setting of Hillside Woods, existing playground, and the driveway. The new cafetorium/stage will be able to accommodate about 500 students/parents for performances and 300 students per lunch period; there will be a backstage area plus a Green Room for music lessons, a Resource Room, four new classrooms and much needed handicap accessibility to both floors of the school. The new café windows will face out onto play areas creating a natural transition into recess. It will be handicap accessible and fully air conditioned. The new design will also allow for the renovation of the existing café into a centralized learning commons. The exterior of the new addition will not only blend, but also sparkle against the existing building's brick work.

As for the auditorium in Farragut Middle School, preliminary designs feature the best way to gain the most use out of the space for various programs. Ideas include using retractable seating which would allow the space to be used as a theater for performances and assemblies, and then also enable full floor space use for indoor recess and other activities.
