Hastings-on-Hudson Board of Education Announces Election of Lauren Berman as President and Silvia Robles as Vice President. Jeremy Galland and Doug Sundheim Sworn in to Serve 3-Year Terms as Board Trustees.

Hastings-on-Hudson, NY - At the Organizational Meeting of the Hastings-on-Hudson Board of Education, Lauren Berman was elected to serve as Board President, and Silvia Robles was elected to serve as Board Vice President, both unanimously for the 2020-2021 school year. Also, newly elected Trustee Jeremy Galland, and re-elected Trustee Doug Sundheim, were sworn in to serve three-year terms ending June 30, 2023.

Doug Sundheim, who served as President of the Board from 2018 – 2020, said about the new Board leadership, “Lauren Berman and Silvia Robles are thoughtful, systemic thinkers who put our children at the forefront of their decision making. They will make excellent executive leaders of the Hastings Board of Education.” On Jeremy Galland he stated, “A lifelong resident of Hastings, with a background in finance, and now a middle school math teacher, Jeremy Galland brings a fresh and helpful perspective to the Board of Education.”

Lauren Berman began serving on the Board in 2018 and was Vice President during the 2019-2020 school year. She received her M.S.Ed. in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Bank Street College of Education; and a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College.. Lauren Berman’s career includes positions in educational leadership as Assistant Director of Admissions at Horace Mann School for Nursery and Kindergarten, and Assistant Director of the Crimson Summer Academy at Harvard University, a three-year pre-college enrichment program for low-income, high-achieving Boston/Cambridge area high school students. In the classroom she was both a kindergarten and first grade teacher. As a volunteer, she was a parent representative on Hastings’ Building Leadership Team and a PTSA Grade Level Liaison.

Board President Lauren Berman stated, "I am grateful to work alongside our dedicated Board Trustees, and Silvia Robles in her new role as Vice President, to serve our district in the year ahead. Together with Dr. Henning-Piedmonte, Ms. Szymanski, and Ms. Caraballo, I am committed to using our resources to best serve all students in Hastings-on-Hudson now, and develop pathways for the growth of the system going forward. I volunteer on the Board of Education because I genuinely care about the development of each student in our schools, and while we all face an uncertain immediate future during the COVID-19 pandemic, the significance of what schools provide our community and society is all the more evident."

Silvia Robles has served on the Board since 2019, and in only her second year, has been named Board Vice President. An attorney by profession, Silvia Robles received her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and a B.A. from Stanford University. She has passed both the New York and California bars.  Her professional experience as a Bilingual Staff Attorney at the Family Violence Law Center, Program Officer for the Gates Millennium Scholars program (Hispanic Scholarship Fund), and Immigration Consultant for the Department of Immigration and Refugee Services (Catholic Charities) serves her well as a Board member. In the Hastings School District she volunteers on the Diversity Committee, and has been a PTSA Executive Board Member and SEPTA member.

Board Vice President Silvia Robles expressed on her appointment, "It is an honor to partner with my colleagues on the Board of Education in service to our school and village communities. In an educational landscape that is rapidly evolving, I am fortunate to work with Lauren Berman as our new Board President as well as Dr. Henning-Piedmonte and all the professional staff and educators who make Hastings-on-Hudson such a strong school district. I look forward to the year ahead and will do my best within my new role to support a school environment that allows children to reach their highest potential in a setting that is safe, nurturing, and stimulating."

Doug Sundheim was re-elected as Board Trustee by an overwhelming number of voters in Hastings. He has served on the Board since 2016, and was Board President from 2018-2020. In that time, his goal has remained the same: Strengthen the stability, trust, and collaboration that's needed to provide a learning environment in which all students can succeed. Doug Sundheim is an organization and leadership consultant and has worked with leaders from Fortune 500 companies to small entrepreneurial firms; and has authored two books, most recently, Taking Smart Risks: How Sharp Leaders Win When Stakes are High. He received his M.A. from Teachers College, Columbia University in Adult Learning and Leadership.

Newly elected Board Trustee Jeremy Galland has been a resident of Hastings for many years, having attended all three of its schools, then returning 10 years ago to raise his family where he so fondly grew up. After attending MIT, Jeremy Galland worked in finance as a member of the New York Board of Trade and the New York Cotton Exchange, where he ran his own company involved with commodity futures, options trading and risk management. In 2014, he decided to make a career change and pursue his passion of teaching and obtained certifications in Mathematics Grades 7-12, Special Education Generalist 7-12, and Special Education Extension for Mathematics 7-12. Currently he is a 7th and 8th grade math teacher at the Kahlil Gibran School #28 in Yonkers.  According to Jeremy Galland, “I became interested in running for the Board as I became more knowledgeable about public school education through my second career and when our village was shocked by the departure of a Superintendent during his first year working for our schools.”

Superintendent Dr. Valerie Henning-Piedmonte enthusiastically welcomed and congratulated the Board members to their new roles and the Board Trustees; and stated that she looks forward to working with them in the coming year. The additional Board Trustees currently serving terms are Alison Andrus, Jeremy Arnon, and Jodie Meyer.
