Hastings High School Students Selected as All-State Musicians

Congratulations Hastings High School students are making noise this year! Six students have been selected to participate in the 2020 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All-State.

Every year, in the spring, students are able to prepare a solo or small ensemble piece to perform in a NYSSMA festival. The students and their music educator dedicate countless hours to practicing their pieces for adjudication by NYSSMA officials.

In August, about 900 students are selected to participate in the NYSSMA Conference All-State music groups. This year, three students from Mr. Jonathan Riss’s chorus class and three students from Mr. Eric Day’s orchestra class were selected.

“It is a huge honor for them to have been accepted,” said Mr. Day.

“All of these students accepted are really terrific,” said Mr. Riss.

The students earned their spots on NYSSMA's All-State Ensembles by scoring a 98 or higher during their auditions at solo and ensemble festivals. Though approximately 900 students are selected each year, there are thousands who audition.

“In an ordinary situation there are 6,000 to 7,000 students auditioning for fewer than 900 slots,” said Mr. Riss, Director of Choral Activities and a NYSSMA adjudicator himself. “It is a very competitive audition process.”

The students will not be able to rehearse and perform in this year’s December Winter Conference in Rochester, which has been cancelled. NYSSMA, however, is assembling the All-State ensembles in a virtual format to record a virtual All-State Concert. The concert will feature each of the All-State ensembles in performance, including the six Hastings-on-Hudson students who have diligently worked to achieve recognition.

The students who have been selected are:
  • Arden Pochna – Soprano 1 – Treble Chorus
  • Jacob Prisament – Double Bass – Symphony Orchestra
  • Atri Ray – Bass 1 – Mixed Chorus
  • Dahlia Seidel – Trumpet – Symphonic Band
  • Beatrice Seidenberg – Violin – Alternate
  • Madeline Sledge – Alto 1 – Mixed Chorus
