Hillside Students Seeking Winter Coats for Local Donation

Coat Drive Poster With the weather getting colder, some students at Hillside Elementary School are asking for donations to make it a little warmer for those in need.

Hillside Elementary’s safety patrol team is asking their classmates and community to donate children’s coats to a local non-profit organization Family to Family. The organization based in Hastings-on-Hudson is dedicated to providing food, personal hygiene products and other basic life essentials to American families struggling with the challenges of poverty, issues that safety patrol members discuss in their weekly meetings.

“We’re doing the coat drive to support families in need. If they don’t have anything to keep them warm in the winter, we want to help,” said safety patrol member Theo Salvanto.

Safety patrol team members, all of whom are in the fourth grade, have been steadily leading the way in promoting a positive school environment and aiding local charities this year. Under the training of school counselor Juliann Snyder, the students develop their own ideas on how to take action in helping others both inside and outside the school.

“They are role models for the school,” said Snyder. “They put on their vest and they look to make a difference, especially during these times when our spirits are down and we want to model compassion and empathy.” The safety patrol team does not take its responsibility lightly; and has taken on the challenge of supporting those in their community who need help in these uncertain times.

“Due to the pandemic, a lot of people have lost their jobs and we’re helping get coats for people who can’t really afford them right now,” said safety patrol member Pillar Bates. The recipients of the coats are to be determined by the organization, however, Executive Director of Family to Family Pam Koner said they will likely go to families in need in nearby localities.

“We’re thrilled,” said Koner. “We’ve done a lot of things with Hillside over the years and this is excellent.” Donation boxes can be found at each entrance to Hillside Elementary School labeled “Safety Patrol Coat Drive” until Feb. 12th.
