The Hastings-on-Hudson Parent Teacher Student Association held the first Hillside Halloween Fun Run Sunday to help fundraise for the organization and give students a chance to show off their Halloween costumes.

“I like costumes, I like Halloween, and I like to run,” said third grader Ellie R.

Over 200 students registered to run, and the event raised approximately $13,000. Money raised from the event will help fund a variety of activities including field trips, classroom experiences, supplies, and scholarships.

“We wanted to do something fun and different,” said Hastings-on-Hudson PTSA Vice President of Funding Tanya Rynders. “It’s a fun time for the kids to get to play with their costumes and we wanted to do a fundraiser that wasn’t just selling stuff.”

Partnering with Get Movin' Fundraising, a company that offers healthy, educational, and fun ways to fundraise, Hastings-on-Hudson PTSA members hope to give children a fun activity for Halloween without being too competitive.

“We aren’t as focused on the race part, it is about getting kids active but it's also something different to get kids excited and eager to participate,” said Rynder.

The event is free for all students who are encouraged to wear something frightful while they run, walk, skip, or monster mash to the finish line. Parents are also able to participate in the run with their children.

Running helpers holding water bottles will be present as costumed runners take the track.
