Hillside Elementary School Celebrates World Kindness Day
Hillside Elementary School is out to make the world a kinder place!
The school celebrated World Kindness Day this past week, a global day that promotes the importance of being kind to one another, yourself, and the world. Hillside Elementary School’s fourth grade safety patrol had the special mission of helping all students join in on the festivities on November 13.
“Celebrating kindness can bring peace to our world,” said safety patrol member Benjamin F.
Safety patrol team members demonstrated their kindness by reading to younger students at Hillside Elementary School and visiting former teachers. Students returned the favor by giving the safety patrol team a round of applause and thanks.
“It was also nice to receive compliments from the younger students that we are doing a great job,” said safety patrol member Alden A.
As an additional benefit to their visit, the safety patrol received plenty of questions on their positions and possibly inspired a few future safety patrol members.
“It was fun to be asked how to be part of safety patrol and to explain our role and what we do,” said Alden A.
“Mrs. Snyder will need to buy lots more vests,” said Benjamin F.
Hillside Elementary School Guidance Counselor Juliann Snyder said the day was a great way to teach kindness and to put it into action.
“The best thing we can do to make our world a better place is to teach our students to be kind and compassionate,” said Snyder. “At Hillside we celebrate the importance of being kind through good modeling, the consistency of teaching what it means to be kind, and the benefits of having a kind and inclusive environment.”
Snyder was also surprised to be on the receiving end of her lesson after being invited to Eryn Reigner’s first grade class for special notes of kindness created by the students themselves.
“It brought tears to my eyes,” said Snyder. “Students were reminded today to be the change they want to see in the world and that the world is full of kind people. And if you can't find one, be one.”
