The Buzz: Hillside Elementary School Celebrates National Nutrition Month with First-Ever "Discovery Kitchen" Event

Discovery kitchen picturesHeld annually in March, National Nutrition Month is a campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. This year’s theme is “Fuel for the Future,” encouraging students to be mindful about the food they eat and how it impacts the planet.

With the help of Nicole Leote, a registered Dietician with Chartwells Dining Services, Hillside Elementary School will host “Discovery Kitchen” events that reinforce nutrition initiatives. Extending beyond academics, Discovery Kitchen will engage students with fresh recipes, culinary demonstrations and tastings, and fun and informative nutrition education.

“National Nutrition Month is the perfect time to begin educating students on how to best fuel their bodies with healthy foods and develop healthy habits for well beyond their school years,” Leote said.

Starting with this month’s "Plant Power" theme, during their lunch periods on Wednesday, March 22, students were given an education, demonstration, and tasting of a fresh, plant-based recipe.

What was on the menu? Black bean and corn salsa.

Kid-tested and approved, the colorful recipe makes an excellent side dish or snack served with whole grain tortilla chips. It features black beans, sweet corn, and fresh bell peppers, which provide an excellent source of protein and antioxidants.

“Outside the cafeteria, kids can take what they’ve learned to explore how they and their families can incorporate more healthy habits into their daily routines,” said Leote.
