FMS Extracurricular Activities
Joining after-school clubs is a great way for students to find a connection with one another, a passion, or even to try something new. This school year, Farragut Middle School teachers and club advisors are bringing a variety of clubs and activities for students.
Two popular clubs on the list this year are Debate Club and Comic Club.
“In the debate club, students explore the nuances of public speaking through a study of speech and debate,” said Social Studies Teacher and Club Advisor Devita Cruz.
The debate club allows students to be immersed in their studies by competing against each other in public forum-style debate competitions, with the opportunity to compete against other schools in the tri-state area.
Club members also participate in the American Debate League, traveling to schools all around New York City once a month, on a Saturday, to compete. Throughout the day, there are three rounds of debates culminating with an awards ceremony.
“Students can make it into the championship rounds, as a few teams did last year, and have the opportunity to qualify for the Harvard Classic. For students who choose not to compete, they join the debate club to hone their argumentative skills. We conduct fun, large-scale 'impromptu' debates, as well,” Cruz said.
The Comic Club is a new club formed this year and has been gaining lots of traction.
“In the Comic Club, students can play games, write stories, and have fun. There are no requirements for the club. We just want this to be a place where students can express their ideas, relax, and most importantly, have fun!” said French Teacher and Club Advisor Stephanie DeFino.
