'Tis the season of giving and middle schoolers are doing just that!

Recently, the Environmental Club hosted a Sneaker Drive Fundraiser at Farragut Middle School. The students worked with a free Sneaker Recycling Program called GotSneakers, whose mission is to recycle and reuse quality pre-loved sneakers.

GotSneakers contributes to the circular economy by keeping sneakers out of landfills and reducing toxic chemicals from being released into the air and soil. All reusable sneakers from its Sneaker Drive Fundraiser Program are recirculated to second-hand markets so people can access quality, pre-owned footwear at affordable prices. Heavily used and damaged footwear is recycled or converted from waste into new energy.

Students received a free Fundraiser Kit to get started with their campaign. From November 29 through December 17, they created the donation boxes.

"They went from classroom to classroom to explain the cause and collect sneakers for donation," said Environmental Club Advisor Jill Ochacher. "They even made announcements over the loudspeaker each morning to spread the word."

"Your trash could be someone else's treasure," said student Sophia Skaskiv.

Students Alyssa Schlacter and Bella Gordon quoted Hellen Keller: "Alone you can do so little; together we can do so much." 

Six large bags of sneakers were collected through the fundraiser with all proceeds donated to the Hastings Youth Council.
