Welcome Back to FMS 2018 - 2019!

Greetings Families!

We hope that this letter finds both our returning families and families new to FMS in the midst of a wonderful summer. September is almost upon us, and we are happy to reach out with information about all our exciting projects and information about the upcoming school year.

It’s been a busy summer here at Farragut Middle School, in anticipation of an exciting year! We will be continuing our work on multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). Added systems of academic support include our newly hired literacy and math coaches, Dr. Rochelle Mitlak and Ms. Agnes Pak. These two professionals will work closely with our team to implement student supports. Our teachers have busied themselves this summer, refining our forms and systems to best target our supports and interventions.

As MTSS also focuses on supporting our students socially and emotionally, we will continue our work with The Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. This is the second year we have collaborated with Yale on the RULER program, which supports student and staff in recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating our emotions. Last year, administration introduced the tenets of RULER and began training with staff.  This coming school year, teachers will begin incorporating anchors of the RULER program in their classrooms.  The Building Leadership Team, comprised of administrators, support staff, and parents, brainstormed ways to incorporate the various aspects of the program with parents. As an additional support for students, our mindfulness curriculum was expanded this summer to aid students looking to manage stress and improve their focus. All this work builds off our already robust Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program!

Our teaching professionals have been hard at work this summer. Teachers of our Courageous Conversations courses reflected on the first year of implementation and further developed curriculum. We have also had our noses in some very good books! Staff has been reading different texts inspired by our second annual Multicultural Book Fair including Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Blind Spot by Mahzarin Banaji and Anthony Greenwald. There has also been focused curriculum work in the area of Language Arts, Health, Home and Careers, and Media Literacy. Fifth grade teachers are unpacking the Next Generation Science Center and designing innovative, hands-on lessons. Those working in integrated co-taught classrooms are meeting to craft meaningful learning experiences for all our children. We also eagerly await the newest addition to our Makerspace, the GlowForge Laser Cutter, courtesy of the Hastings Education Foundation.

Lastly, our halls will look a little different when our doors open in September. Our masterful and crafty Facilities department has carved out a space for a fully integrated Student Support Suite which will house our counseling staff, social worker, and school psychologist. Our newly renovated ground floor in the Farragut Wing will also house three new classrooms. There will be a new entrance and we anticipate some growing pains as we get comfortable with some of our new spaces and procedures.

Student schedules will be posted to the Student and Parent Portal on August 27. Please refer to our district registrar, Ms. Michele Porter, at porter@hohschools.org with any questions. Supply letters and lists are available on our homepage and on team pages.

Please enjoy the remaining days of summer. We look forward to welcoming back returning students, introducing ourselves to new members of our community, and diving into another enriching year of school.

Sincerely,

Gail Kipper                                                                  Christopher Keogh
